The Children’s Long Term Care (LTC) unit and the Children’s Development Day Care Unit (CDU) design covers an area of approximately 30,000 m² in a pleasant, richly landscaped corner of the Al Wakra Hospital campus, and the proposed building consumes an estimated 27,000 m², leaving roughly 3,000 +/- m² for the landscape design.

The site is arranged into three (3) separate zones which link directly to the building arrangement. The area to the North which surrounds the ‘Neighborhood’, the middle section of the site which address the ‘Souq’ and then the area to the South which embraces the ‘Inpatient Units’, which each zone having a distinct design approach.

The Concept Design up to Tender submission has been grounded in the following objectives established during  Project Verification:

  1. Social – create an environment that promotes social interactions between clients, their families and their caregivers;

  4. Interactive – create an interactive and engaging environment that stimulates activity, imagination in all users;

  5. Colourful – create an environment that is exciting and vibrant; Sensory –  an environment that stimulates the senses- touch, taste, smell, sound, sight;

  6. Educational – an environment that has story to tell, something to give;

  7. Therapeutic – an environment that promotes healing.

My role on this project was to redo the previous Detail Design that had been developed by Arcadis Landscape. The Architect wanted a new layout to tie into the updated architectural design. I redesigned the landscape to meet the architectural and client needs while ensuring that the new design would meet the needs of the children who would be living in this new hospital. I then proceeded to construction documentation for the project. The Tender process was handled by others, but a final tender review was conducted by me to ensure that all infrastructure needs were incorporated due to the external MEP station to the south of the Hospital.
