The Doha Metro is Qatar Rail’s most prominent and visible project. The Red Line is part of the first phase, to be opened to the public in late 2019. Station design is critical and reflects the heritage of Qatar. The client wanted a technically-focused team with the know-how to apply the complex Architectural Branding Manual requirements to the station public areas.

The Red Line, also referred to as the Coastal Line, runs approximately north-south from the Al Wakra in the south to Lusail in the north. It currently has sixteen (16) stations due for completion and a future connection to Hamad International Airport (Terminal 1). Arcadis designed the following:

  1. Al Doha Al Jadeda – four (4) stations with surrounding landscape of 22,275 m² and MEP areas

  2. Umm Ghuwailina - five (5) stations with surrounding landscape of 37,815 m² and MEP areas

  3. Al Matar - four (4) stations with surrounding landscape of 35,330m² and MEP areas

  4. Oqba Ibn Nafie - two (2) stations with surrounding landscape of 19,400 m² and MEP areas

The Green Line, also referred to as the Education Line, runs approximately north-south from the Al Mansoura in the south to Al Riffa in the north. It currently has ten (10) stations due for completion.

  1. Al Mansoura - two (2) stations with surrounding landscape of 8,710 m² and MEP areas

Using the guidelines and principles as outlined in the project Architectural Branding Manual Part 3, my team  and I delivered a design for all the noted at grade station entrances and a few other Technical areas around the new underground Metro line. The concept design was based on the noted branding manual, while the schematic and detail design were developed to meet all local regulations where applicable to ensure approval by the local municipality while maintaining the design intent of the branding manual.
